この本はイギリスのローハンプトン大学に2000年に提出された博士号論文を元にしている。ヴィクトリア朝時代のポピュラーな絵本トイブック(普通の絵本の形態であり、おもちゃとは無関係)を研究したものである。トイブックは、19世紀の1850年からの約40年間、イギリスで多くの出版社から大量に出版された。この著書では、ラウトリッジ社の出版物に焦点を当てる。理由は、ラウトリッジ社は、この全期間を通してトイブックを継続的に出した唯一の出版社であり、エドマンド・エヴァンズとのコラボレーションにより、ウオルター・クレインとランドルフ・コールデコットが傑作を作成したのもこの出版社である。この3人は後の絵本に大きな影響を与えた。この著書は、ヴィクトリア朝時代の絵本であるトイブックについての初めての本格的な研究書であり、その出現から展開、そして現代の絵本との関係までを論述している。
